Historical Context – When the Past Meets the Future

In 2017, Losch Luxembourg brought together Mal tradition and modern electric mobility for the first time. The Volkswagen Beetle represents the beginning of the company's history, while electromobility symbolises its future.

To connect these two worlds, a classic Beetle was converted into an electric vehicle by Losch's apprentices, who were supervised by an experienced team who introduced them to electric technology in a practical way.

The project team – Know-how meets the next generation

A team of technical trainers and service staff accompanied the apprentices in theory and practice.The apprentices came from several fields:

• Mechatronics

• Painting

• Bodywork

In this way, each stage of the project was carried out in a professional manner and the young people were able to acquire high-level practical skills.

Conversion – from combustion engine to electric vehicle

  1. Disassembly Process

    The work began with a complete dismantling of the vehicle, leaving only the bodywork and chassis.

  2. Interior Renovation

    The interior has been renovated and refurbished.

  3. Braking System Overhaul

    The braking system has been overhauled and partially replaced.

  4. Bodywork Restoration

    The bodywork has been completely restored.

Battery technology – A new power source for a classic car

The old 40-litre petrol tank has been replaced by modern batteries. Since these are much heavier than the fuel in a tank, a new weight distribution was necessary:

• Batteries have been installed in the front trunk,

• as well as under and behind the occupants in the passenger compartment.

This preserves the driving symmetry and ensures balanced road handling.

Painting and reassembly

Body Preparation

After the restore is complete:

• The vehicle was temporarily put back on its wheels.

• A complete preparation of the surfaces has been carried out.

Painting and Finishing

The Beetle was placed in the paint booth:

• The entire vehicle has been masked, painted, polished and completely renovated.

• Both the interior and the exterior have been given a new shine.

Final assembly – Electrification and finishes

• Some of the batteries have been installed in the front trunk.

• The electric motor has been permanently connected and connected to the gearbox.

• The Beetle has gradually taken on its new identity as an electric vehicle.

Presentation & Public Appearances

The completed electric Beetle was presented for the first time at the LOF Oldtimerday 2018 in Luxembourg.It was then exhibited and driven at various events.

Highlight:

• Used for the 15th anniversary of the André Losch Foundation,

• Personalities had the opportunity to drive the EKäfer through the streets of Luxembourg,

• During the filming, they shared their connection with the Foundation.

Business Importance

The electrified Beetle remains in the historic collection of Losch Luxembourg.

It symbolizes:

• the valorization of the past,

• the courage to innovate,

• the promotion of young talent,

• and the transition to sustainable mobility.
