Genesis and concept

In the late 1980s, Volkswagen was looking to create new types of vehicles to expand the Golf lineup.

The idea of a compact car capable of off-road use was revolutionary at the time. To realize this vision, VW teamed up with SteyrDaimlerPuch in Graz, a recognized specialist in robust all-wheel-drive vehicles such as the Puch G.

The Golf II Country was based on the Golf II Syncro, but was extensively modified:

• significantly raised bodywork,

• reinforced suspension components,

• specific protections for off-roading,

• and a distinctive exterior design.

The result was a vehicle that could handle both on the road and on rough roads — a precursor to modern crossover SUVs.

Technical characteristics and skills

  1. Engine

    The Golf Country was equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 98 hp.

  2. All-wheel Drive

    The heart of the model was the Syncro permanent all-wheel drive with viscous clutch.

  3. Chassis and Suspension

    The Country had a high ground clearance of 20 cm and reinforced suspension, specially designed to tackle uneven terrain.

  4. Off-Road Equipment

    Raised bumpers and crash bars; External spare wheel attached to the rear; Additional protections and side trims

Design and interior

Exterior Design

Visually, the Country was immediately recognizable:

• characteristic rear wheel carrier,

• high ground clearance,

• robust plastic bumpers,

• Unique off-road look.

Typical colors included green, blue, red, and black — with some hues being specific to this model.

Interior

The interior was functional and durable, perfectly suited to the vehicle's off-road vocation.Volkswagen also offered several comfort options:

• leather seats,

• air conditioning,

• Premium interior packages.

Thus, the Country combined everyday practicality, comfort and a spirit of adventure.

Special series

Golf Country Chrom Edition

This rare version was distinguished by:

• chrome bumpers,

• a chrome-plated spare wheel support,

• a more luxurious interior. Production was very limited.

Golf Country GTI

The sportiest of Country:

• 107 hp GTI engine,

• more dynamic settings.

Thanks to its very low production, it is now one of the most sought-after versions.

Production and reception of the market

The Golf Country was produced exclusively at Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz. In total, only 7,735 examples were made — far fewer than originally planned.

The reasons for the low commercial success:

• the vehicle was ahead of its time,

• SUV buyers preferred larger models,

• Drivers of compact cars rarely looked for all-wheel drive and off-road protection.

Despite this, the Country has become a popular collector's item today.

Significance and legacy

The Golf Country is now considered one of the first true crossover vehicles. It combined:

• compact size,

• 4x4 technology,

• off-road-inspired design,

• everyday versatility.

It paved the way for modern VW models such as the Tiguan, TRoc or Taigo, which successfully take up this innovative concept.
