Historical roots and inspiration

The creation of the Type 181 can be traced directly back to the VW Type 82 Kübelwagen of World War II. The Type 82 was a rugged, off-road vehicle based on the Beetle, used by the Wehrmacht as a multi-purpose vehicle.

Its design – light, simple, reliable – formed the design basis of the future Type 181.

In the 1960s, the Bundeswehr was looking for a light, multi-purpose vehicle. At the same time, Volkswagen wanted to develop a model that used existing components and could be produced at low cost. It is from this combination that the Type 181 was born.

Design and functionality

The Type 181 has a distinctly functional design – angular, practical and easy to modify.Its distinguishing features:

• Removable doors

• Folding windshield

• Heavy-duty canvas canopy

• Flat and simple body panels

• Interior devoid of superfluous mechanics

These elements make it attractive as both a military vehicle and a leisure car.

End of production and successor

  1. Production Stopped

    Production stopped in 1983.

  2. Reasons for Stopping Production

    • Stricter safety and emissions standards

    • Aging of the technical base

    • Decline in demand

  3. Successor Vehicle

    In the military field, it was replaced by the VW Iltis (Type 183), produced from 1978 for the Bundeswehr. This model is much more modern, performs better off-road and is ultimately the last true off-road vehicle produced by Volkswagen.

A total of 140,768 examples of the Type 181 were produced.

Military/Civilian Breakdown

• approx. 90,000 for the civil market

A large proportion of the civilian models were exported to the United States.

Peculiarities & current cult status

Today, the VW Type 181 is a sought-after vehicle by collectors, in particular thanks to:

• its iconic design

• its status as a recreational and summer vehicle

It has a loyal community, especially in the United States and Europe, where it is often restored with care or personalized with passion.
